First film co-produced between the United States and Australia and financed entirely with American capital through MGM, the film would have the highest budget with which Weir had worked until then in his entire career, 6 million dollars to tell the story of Guy Hamilton, an Australian journalist who arrives in Jakarta to cover the turbulent political situation, meeting there two people who will change his life: Billy Kwan, an idealistic photographer who sees in Sukarno the leader Indonesia needs, and Jill Bryant, the assistant to the military attaché at the British embassy and romantic object of the protagonist.
With constant visual games that assimilate and translate the character of puppets and puppetry that Weir assigns to his characters, it is brilliant the way in which, throughout the film, the roles initially described by Kwan in the story narrated to Hamilton are distorted to reveal the true natures of the protagonist triangle: And if in Gibson’s and Weaver’s characters this transformation entails the departure from the subtle mechanisms of control exercised by the photographer so that their love can serve as a battering ram against the many difficulties that will stand in their way when the inevitable civil conflict that is brewing in the country breaks out, it is in Kwan where the transformation is most eloquent.

Peter Weir took over the adaptation of the novel by Christopher Koch, who submitted a script that Weir didn’t like and passed on to Alan Sharp and David Williamson. Koch complained that the script ended up being «55% Williamson/Weir, and 45% Koch.» The film is set in Yakarta, Japan.
The film is set in Jakarta, but there was no permission to shoot in Indonesia, so filming began in the Philippines, but due to death threats from Muslim radicals against Weir and Gibson it had to be moved to Australia. Although Gibson took the threats as a joke, saying, «If they really want to kill us, what are they sending us a note for?»[6
