The hunting sector is facing a «complex» and «very difficult» situation, has recognized the president of RFEC Manuel Gallardo, in statements to Libre Mercado. «The animal lobby has reached the sphere of power. It has reached the Government and it has reached the Parliament», he insists.

They consider that this Government has declared war on them. Up to five ministries have undertaken different actions that would aim to weaken the hunting sector, directly or indirectly. They have no doubts, the ultimate goal is to «definitively put an end to hunting activity».

«The pinnacle of success is with the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030, which creates a General Directorate for Animal Rights,» Gallardo explains. «Strictly speaking, animals are not subjects of law. What we do have are obligations towards them.» In his opinion, all this is a great absurdity. «There is no such thing as the right of the forest either, and yet we cannot go and burn it or cut it down.»

«The Animal Protection and Rights Act is about humanizing animals. And a society that loves animals more than people is a sick society,» he argues. The new rule «is an aggression.» «It talks about retirement of animals, working hours, minimum ages to start working…. It says that they are not considered production animals because they cannot be unionized, that all animals in this country must be castrated, so that we are prevented from breeding with our dogs, that we cannot give away a puppy or make a replacement of your troops (as far as hunting is concerned) or have other auxiliary animals.»

During the next two hunting seasons this tactic was used and LACS members, thanks to the propaganda gained by this type of actions, increased exponentially. Sabotage by militants acting alone began to appear in the media. One such person was Gwen Barter, the woman who became known in those days for blocking a vehicle used by hunters. Months later she also prevented a fox hunt by blocking the exit of a den with her own body.

They also inspired and motivated thousands of people to get involved in the fight for animal liberation. Without the communication technologies that we have today – such as the internet or mobile devices – they managed to create a network of distribution and alternative training (communiqués, direct action manuals, internal debates, analysis, …) that allowed the expansion of this model of militancy throughout much of Western geography.

One of the main consequences of poaching is the extinction of numerous species of animals, which brings with it important and very serious changes in the ecosystem. Without going any further, this disappearance of wildlife considerably alters the quality of water, giving rise to the appearance of bacteria that are harmful to health. Moreover, it increases the manifestation of various pests and zoonotic diseases transmissible between animals and humans that end up posing a great risk to health. Poaching also ends up being largely responsible for the proliferation of disasters such as fires.

As hard and shocking as the death of an animal at the hands of a poacher is, it is nothing compared to the fear that different species of animals experience for this very reason. In order to flee from a possible death, the survival instinct leads them to move away from their natural habitat, thus changing their behavior, their way of life and even their way of reproduction. All this in order to avoid any contact with humans and to be able to live peacefully without being in constant danger of extinction.
